How to get to Mc Lean Falls

The Mc Lean Falls car park is located along the Southern Scenic Route in the Catlins. There are plenty of signs along the Chaslands Highway that tell you to turn off to the Rewcastle road. Most of the road conditions are sealed, only the last 3 kilometres follows a gravel road until you get to the car park. 

From the car park it is a 20 minute walk along the well maintained, flat path until you get to the impressive McLean Falls. 

Best time to visit Mc Lean Falls

Generally the best time to visit the Catlins waterfalls is after rain. They are much more powerful than after drier days. And because the path is from gravel and well maintained, you don’t have to worry about muddy shoes. Because the Mc Lean Falls are quite popular, you can expect some crowds during the day. So to have the falls all for yourself you either gotta be lucky or get there early.

What to expect at the McLean Falls

The Mc Lean Falls are located along the Tautuku river and the short walk towards the waterfalls takes you trough a stunning forest. The well maintained gravel and boarded walk is an easy walk with stunning bush and different trees to spot along the way. 

After about 10 – 15 minutes walking you will get to the first, small waterfall. Be careful here as it can be slippery if you go down to the small cascade. 

Be insured when you travel!

No matter how careful you are, accidents can happen.
A slip during hiking is made before you realize it, and the consequences can be bigger than you want to think of.

Only a few minutes away from the main Mc Lean waterfall you will see some stairs that take you up to the viewpoint. You can get really close to the McLean Falls and if it’s safe to do, you can hike up to the main Mc Lean Falls along the rocks. 

There isn’t a designated path to the upper level waterfall. But if you have some experience of rock scrambling, then you can get there without much problem. However, be careful for the slippery rocks and if there’s too much water it’s isn’t recommended to climb all the way up.

You can still admire the upper and lower level Mc Lean falls from the safe viewpoint.  The 22 meter high Catlins waterfall is one of the beautiful ones in this region and definitely worth a visit!

Take a scenic flight over Milford Sound

A Milford Sound scenic flight is the perfect way to see the impressive landscape of Fiordland NP from the air. Depart from Milford Airport and track west along Milford Sound. Best places to stay in the Catlins

The Catlins are some of the most underrated destinations on New Zealand’s South Island but absolutely worth visiting. If your itinerary allows it, I would even recommend staying for a few nights around Catlins to explore not only the Catlins Conservation Park but everything in between from Invercargill to Kaka point. You can either base yourself along the coast, in Invercargill or at some of the quiet camps. There are plenty of options, but here are the best accommodations to stay in our opinion.

Catlins Mohua Park

Located close-by Catlins Forest park are these stunning self-contained chalets with free WiFi and private parking. Each chalet features a fully equipped kitchen, a dining setting and a lounge area with a sofa.
