About Lover’s Leap waterfall

Lover’s Leap waterfall got its name from an old legend. The story goes that a royal prince went hunting in the jungle and got lost. Luckily he met a young lady from the local village and was guided by her. They fell in love, but the Prince his parents were against their marriage and refused to allow it. In their despair at being forced apart they jumped from the top of the waterfall to their deaths below, where they could be united forever.

How to get to Lover’s Leap waterfall Sri Lanka

You will find Lover’s Leap waterfall approximately 3 kilometres outside of Nuwara Eliya town. You can see the waterfall from far away, but if you want a more adventurous experience, you can hike to the top of the waterfall. There you can admire the falls from closer up and enjoy the sweeping views of the country side of Nuwara Eliya. A 500 metre trail that leads up to the waterfall starts from the entrance of Pedro Tea Factory. You have to walk through the tea factory and follow the gravelly path through the pretty and rural countryside. It is a beautiful 30 minute hike and the uphill path isn’t too strenuous. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes if you intend to walk. You can get to the waterfall viewpoint or the start point of the trail by tuk tuk or with your rental scooter or car.

What to expect at Lover’s Leap waterfall Sri Lanka

Lover’s Leap waterfall is set in the beautiful green tea countryside of Nuwara Eliya with an incredible view at the top. The water flows over hard granite ledges gushing down the 30 metres to be collected in a tank and used for drinking in Nuwara Eliya. It depends on the season how powerful the waterfall is. You can visit the waterfall anytime, but considering the rainy seasons, the waterfall is most powerful from October until January. Take into account that these months also have the highest chance of rain. So make sure to check the weather forecast before you make your way up to the viewpoint. 

The trek to Lover’s Leap waterfall viewpoint isn’t too strenuous. But make sure you wear shoes with good grip because the rocks might be slippery. Especially in rainy season!
