About Echo Beach Bali
The original name of Echo Beach is Pantai Batu Mejan, named after the Hindu temple Pura Batu Mejan on site. It’s black sand beach is maybe not one of the most beautiful beaches in Bali, but Echo Beach has mainly become so popular due to its advanced reef breaks, the stunning 180-degree sea view and the beautiful sunsets. The beach is most of the time clean thanks to the joint efforts among various surf schools and beach bars along Canggu’s coast, which carry out routine beach clean-ups.
There are also delicious seafood cafes set on a high vantage point along the shore. Be aware that the black sand gets very hot, especially during a sunny day you will not be able to walk barefoot on the beach.
How to get to Echo Beach Bali
Echo Beach Bali is located at the end of Jl. Pura Batu Mejan directly in front of Echo Beach Club and La Brisa.
The beach itself is accessible down a few steps to the right of the gate. 100 metres along the coastline and set upon the low-lying rocks are parasols and colourful beanbags for chill-out sessions. It is approximately 35 km west of North Kuta and Seminyak, and a 14-km drive west from the provincial capital of Denpasar. For those staying in Canggu, it’s walkable from the main street of Batu Bolong. Parking costs 2000 IDR per scooter.
Things to do at Echo Beach Bali
The coast of Echo Beach is excellent for sunbathing. Just bring your own towel, rent a sun bed and chill for the day. Echo Beach is also perfect for sunset strolls or sunset beers as the sun sets right in front of the beach. Buy a fresh sweet barbecued corn at one of the local beach vendors, pick a spot to sit and order a Bintang or coconut while enjoying the sunset. The sunsets in Canggu are amazing and often turn into real color bombs.
Along the coast of Echo Beach are rows of shacks with surfboards for rent, ding repairs, and small beach warungs. Perfect to order lunch or dinner. While most beach bars are open during the day, even more restaurants come to life a little later with barbecues at sunset.
Echo Beach is also a great spot for surf, landscape and portrait photographers. But the beach is most famous for its waves which are most of the time only for advanced surfers. Ask locals about the situation and be honest about your own skills. The paddle out can sometimes be a bit tricky for beginners, so observe the locals to see how it’s done.
