But for other viewpoints in Madeira you have to hike a short or longer distance. Some of the most famous and beautiful sunrise viewpoints in Madeira is Pico do Arieiro. But there are also lesser known viewpoints that are absolutely worth a visit on any time of the day. Ponta do Bode viewpoint

If you’re looking for a lesser known viewpoint facing São Lourenço, then head to Ponta do Bode. Because this isn’t a popular viewpoint in Madeira (yet!), you will most likely have it for yourself! And a huge plus is that this is also a fantastic sunrise viewpoint. Facing east towards Ponta de São Lourenço, the views are absolutely spectacular from Ponta do Bode. You are further away from the tail so the view is more extensive. And besides that, you will also have another interesting view on the red cone shaped rocks towards the west.

Ponta do Bode – One of the best sunrise viewpoints in Madeira

The Mars like landscape is very interesting to see. The cone-shaped red rock formations have been formed by years of erosion and are now an interesting geodiversity site. So you actually have two great vantage points from Ponta do Bode. One towards the east facing Ponta de São Lourenço, and the other one facing west towards the remarkable cone-shaped red rock formations.

How to get to Ponta do Bode viewpoint

Drive to the cemetery do Caniçal in Machico where you can park your car at the parking. From here it’s only a little kilometre up the red rocky hill with 145 meters of incline until you get to the viewpoint. 

Miradouro Ponta do Rosto 

Another fantastic sunrise viewpoint is Miradouro Ponta do Rosto overlooking the ocean and volcanic cliffs of Ponta de São Lourenço. This is also an easy spot to drive to where you can just park your car and see the incredible view. Because Ponta do Rosto is located on the most eastern tail of the island, you will have an impressive views on the cliffs of Ponta de São Lourenço. How to get to Ponta do Rosto 

Miradouro da Ponta do Rosto is located on the eastern tail of Madeira Island. It is a popular spot for sunrise and very easy to reach. You can drive all the way up to the viewpoint, park your car and start shooting and enjoying the view. So no hike involved here, a perfect viewpoint for everyone! From Funchal it only takes you 30 minutes to get here. There is no public transport going to this viewpoint, so the best way to get here, as well as exploring Madeira Island, is with a rental car. 

Ponta de São Lourenço photospot viewpoint 

Just a little hike away from Ponta do Rosto viewpoint you can have a completely different view on Ponta de São Lourenço. This viewpoint gives a great perspective on the eastern tail of São Lourenço as you can watch all the way until the end. There is also an epic photo spot which you can see on the picture below. But please only stand here if you’re confident of your legs and when it’s not too windy. This is another great sunrise viewpoint in Madeira, but of course also worth to check out during the day. 

How to get to Ponta de São Lourenço viewpoint 

You can get to the Ponta de São Lourenço viewpoint via two ways. The first option if from Ponta do Rosto. If you walk east, along the fenced-off navigation station you will see a path heading around the station that leads you to the ‘São Lourenço Photospot’. Once you’ve made your way behind the navigation station, you can see the peaks of the cliffs in front of you. There is one peak that has a cement pillar on it. That’s your aim. From that spot you can see the whole tail of Ponta de Sгo Lourenзo which is very impressive!

The other option is to get to this viewpoint from the start of the Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço hike. Also from this side you can see the summit with the cement pillar on it. You just have to find a path that’s a bit worn and find your way up the hill. 

Ponta do Pargo lighthouse viewpoint

Located on the far western point of Madeira Island you will find Ponta do Pargo and the lighthouse. Situated on a 300 meters high cliff above sea level, this viewpoint is a fantastic sunset spot. It is a pretty well known spot and very easy to access as you can enter the viewpoint direct from the parking lot. With unobstructed ocean views you can see the sun setting in the horizon on a clear day. Ponta do Pargo viewpoint is situated along the rugged coastline approximately two kilometres outside the town of Ponta do Pargo. There are no seats around so bring a rug if you want to sit down to enjoy the sunset.

Miradouro de Boa Morte

This viewpoint located in Ponta do Pargo is another hidden sunset viewpoint in Madeira. Not known to many people, so you’ll most likely have this viewpoint all for yourself. It is a 5 minute walk down from the road and you will pass a small church on your way to the viewpoint. From here you’ll have incredible 180 degree panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean and rugged cliffs of the western part of Madeira Island. 

Ponta do Tristão 

Ponta do Tristão is the northernmost point of Madeira Island, located in the Porto Moniz parish. The viewpoint of Ponta do Tristão offers another incredible ocean view with the rugged cliffs of Madeira’s north coast  on the left side. Although that this is not the most well known viewpoint of Madeira, it offers an incredible off the beaten sunset experience in Madeira. There are no facilities at all here, so bring your own drinks, towel and snacks and enjoy this quiet place with some of the most beautiful views in Madeira. From the road where you can park you car it is a short 5 minute walk down a dirt path to get to the best view seen on the pictures below. 

Ponta do Tristão – One of the best sunset viewpoints in Madeira

Ponta da Ladeira

This is another wonderful viewpoint on the north western coast of Madeira island. Just like Ponta do Tristão there are also no facilities and it’s also not a very well known spot. So if you’re looking for an off the beaten path sunset spot in Madeira, then choose from either Ponta da Ladeira or Ponta do Tristão. From Ponta da Ladeira you will see Fajã da Quebrada Nova which is a tiny coastal village, isolated from the rest of the island by tall mountain cliffs and the Atlantic ocean. This viewpoint in Madeira is easy to reach from the road where you can park your car. From there it is only 5 minutes walking down a dirt path to the best views from the cliff.

Ponta da Ladeira – One of the best sunset viewpoints in Madeira

Miradouro do Fio 

Miradouro do Fio is another wonderful coastal viewpoint overlooking the rugged cliffs and vast ocean. There is a platform from where you can enjoy the unobstructed ocean and cliff views. If you want to enjoy the views a bit longer, then have a seat at O Fio Tea House. Here they serve delicious scones, typical Madeirean food and a lovely terrace overlooking the ocean. Perfect for a coffee, lunch or dinner stop. 

Raposeira sunset viewpoint

Raposeira viewpoint is located along the south coast of Madeira island, but because it is orientated towards the south west, you can see a great sunset from this spot. It’s a short 10 minute walk down from the parking spot along a dirt trail to the viewpoint. Raposeira viewpoint is a kind of platform where you can relax and take in the views. There are no facilities around so bring your own drinks and enjoy the wonderful view, preferably with sunset! 

Pico do Arieiro

Pico do Arieiro is one of the most famous, beautiful and easiest accessible viewpoints in Madeira. After a 30 minute drive from Funchal you are on 1818 meters height which is the third highest peak of Madeira. If you’re lucky, you will be above the clouds what makes Pico do Arieiro so unique. You only have to park your car and walk for 5 minutes to get to some of the most amazing viewpoints in Madeira. The best time (of course..) to go to Pico do Arieiro is with sunrise. As with every sunrise mission I would advice you to arrive at the viewpoint about 20 minutes before sunrise so you can enjoy the beautiful pre sunrise colors and reserve your spot. Balcões viewpoint

Vereda dos Balcões is a short hike to one of the most impressive viewpoints in Madeira. It is a 2,7 kilometre hike return so easy to do and doesn’t take too much time. With views on the highest peaks of the island on a clear day, you won’t easily find a better balcony view than this! The valley below the balcony is the Ribeira da Metade valley and if you look to your right, you can see all the way towards the ocean with the Penha d’Águia cliff as another landmark.

Pico Ruivo 

Another one of the incredible mountain viewpoints in Madeira is the highest peak of the island, Pico Ruivo. Standing on 1861 meters Pico Ruivo is as well a great sunrise and sunset viewpoint. In comparison to Pico do Arieiro you are at Pico Ruivo a bit more in the mountain range of Madeira while at Pico do Arieiro you’re a bit closer to the ocean. So the view is absolutely different from Pico Ruivo. One thing to keep in mind is that to get to Pico Ruivo you have to hike. The quickest way to get to Pico Ruivo is from Achada do Teixara because it is more less a flat walk and it’s only 3 kilometres one way.

Miradouro Cristo Rei 

The Cristo Rei statue is located in Garajau and provides a spectacular 180 degree view over the ocean and views on Funchal city. Facing east, this viewpoint is a great place to watch the sunrise and soak in the ocean breeze on an early morning. The view on Funchal is also beautiful and you can even see Desertas Islands from here. It is very easy to get to this viewpoint as it’s only a one minute walk from the parking spot. There is also a cafe located at the parking lot where you can have a coffee with amazing views over the ocean.

Cabo Girão

Cabo Girão is the highest cliff in Europe standing at 580 meters above sea level. At Cabo Girão is a skywalk with amazing 180 degree panoramic views over the Atlantic Ocean. Teh viewpoint is very easy to access and even wheelchair friendly. The skywalk platform itself is with a transparent floor so for some people it might be nerve wrecking to stand on it as you can see through it. But the views are totally worth it! You can even see Fajã de Cabo Girão which is the small land sticking out underneath the platform. Providing this vast view on the ocean, Cabo Girão can be a great sunrise as well a sunset spot.

Pináculo viewpoint Funchal 

Miradouro Pináculo is one of the great viewpoints in Madeira that overlooks Funchal city. Especially with sunset this is a great spot and easy to reach from the city centre. There are public buses going along this road or you can drive up with your rental car. From this viewpoint you’re facing west towards the Cabo Girão skywalk which also is another great viewpoint on Funchal! There are no facilities around here, so bring your own drinks if you prefer to enjoy the views for some time. 

Bica da Cana

Bica da Cana is an incredible sunrise viewpoint in Madeira. The view on the highest peaks of Madeira is just breathtaking. And if you’re lucky, you will have a blanker of clouds beneath you! Bica da Cana viewpoint is located on the Paul da Serra plateau at a height of 1560 meters. Towards the left you can see the São Vicente valley and Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo are in front. You have to be lucky to get the low hanging clouds, just as on Pico do Arieiro. But either way, this viewpoint is breathtaking! It is only a 10 minute walk from the parking to this viewpoint and definitely worth it to check out with sunrise.

Bica da Cana – One of the best sunrise viewpoints in Madeira

How to get to Bica da Cana viewpoint 

Bica da Cana is located on the plateau of Paul da Serra, along the regional road ER110. From Funchal it is about 45 minutes of driving, but from Calheta it’s only 25 minutes. The Bica da Cana hike also starts at this point, so don’t get confused by walking the wrong path. When you arrive at the parking lot, you will see a sign of the Bica da Cana Pinaculo hike with a dirt path leading down. Don’t go here! This is the start of the hiking trail. For the Bica da Cana viewpoint you need to walk up on the wide cobbled road. Usually you will see a chain across this road blocking cars from driving further up. So a little incline is necessary to get to the viewpoint.

Pico Ruivo do Paul

Another great viewpoint on the Paul da Serra plateau is Pico Ruivo do Paul. Located on 1639 meters height, you will have an incredible view on the São Vicente valley and the highest peaks of Madeira island. This viewpoint in Madeira is also one of the lesser known. So if you’re looking for a place more off the beaten path, then head to Pico Ruivo do Paul!

Lombo do Mouro 

Located along the ER 110 road, Lombo do Mouro is a fantastic viewpoint on the Encumeada valley. You can easily find this viewpoint on Google Maps marked as ‘Miradouro Lombo do Mouro’. The viewpoint is located at the hairpin bend and the views towards the Encumeada valley are breathtaking. The weather changes so quickly in the mountains, so you can have all sorts of weather types here. The best circumstances would be with low hanging clouds or completely clear so you can see the whole valley. This is a great spot for photography and perfect if you have a drone.

Encumeada viewpoint

Another fantastic viewpoint located along the road is Encumeada viewpoint, on Google Maps signed as Miradouro da Encumeada. Located at an elevation of 1007 meters, this viewpoint in Madeira offers a stunning views over the north and south valleys of the island. With low hanging clouds you even have a chance of seeing a cloud waterfall which is a true nature phenomenon. Facing north you can see São Vicente on a clear day, and facing south you can see the Ribeira Brava valley. Many hikes start from this spot, so you will most likely come here at least once during your time in Madeira! 

Miradouro do Guindaste

One of the magical coastal sunrise viewpoints in Madeira is Miradouro do Guindaste, also known as Crane viewpoint. This viewpoint on the Northern part of the island faces towards Ponta de São Lourenço with a stunning view on the Penha D’Águia rock of Porto da Cruz. There is a head land which is a great point of interest for photographers but also a perfect spot for your Madeira instagram shot. The view on the rugged cliffs of Madeira Island is mesmerising, especially with the golden light during sunrise! Miradouro do Guindaste is also a great alternative to watch the sunrise if it’s too cloudy in the mountains.

Miradouro do Guindaste – One of the best sunrise viewpoints in Madeira

Miradouro da Portela

Portela viewpoint is located in in Santo da Serra between Porto da Cruz and Machico. Another one of those easy viewpoints in Madeira where you just pull over the car on the side of the road and can enjoy an incredible view. Portela viewpoint overlooks Porto da Cruz and the remarkable Penha d’Águia rock with the highest peaks of Madeira on the left side and ocean on the right side. Located at 670 meters altitude, there is even a chance of low hanging clouds passing by that gives a very mystical vibe. Portela viewpoint is also the take off place for paragliding in Madeira.

Ponta do Sol harbor viewpoint

The village of Ponta do Sol is a laid back town offering amazing sunset views and a small pebble beach. The Ponta do Sol Harbor viewpoint overlooks the ocean and is a great place to take in the sunset views or to have a short walk before you take a seat at one of the great restaurants along the beach. Maré Alta and Estalagem de Ponta do Sol are our suggestions for restaurants in Ponta do Sol. The bridge was built by the Municipality of Ponta do Sol from 1848 to 1850 and overlooks the colourful village and beach. An idyllic place and must visit when you’re in Ponta do Sol. However, it is not some of the most spectacular viewpoints in Madeira, but worth a visit when you’re in Ponta do Sol anyway.

Rocha do Navio viewpoint 

Located at the beautiful hotel Quinta do Furão in Santana, this is one of the unique viewpoints in Madeira where you can see a waterfall pouring down from a cliff into the ocean. There is only one more viewpoint in Madeira where you can see that as well, which is Miradouro do Véu da Noiva. The authentic hotel Quinta do Furão in Santana provides free entrance to this viewpoint for the public. Facing north east, you can see the sunrise from here as well, so in combination with the rugged cliffs and epic waterfall, this viewpoint can’t be missed on your list of best sunrise viewpoints in Madeira! 

Eira do Serrado 

Eira do Serrado viewpoint offers impressive panoramic views overlooking the Curral das Freiras valley. Located at an elevation of 1095 meters, it shows the ‘heart’ of the island surrounded by the majestic mountains of the central massif. The beautiful platform is easy to reach from the parking lot with only a 5 minute walk. Eira do Serrado is also one of the wheelchair friendly viewpoints in Madeira with an equal floor. Access to the viewpoint starts from the parking lot of Estalagem Eira do Serrado which is also a hotel and restaurant. So if you want to lunch or have dinner with a view, you can consider this place! However I think there are other places with better and cheaper food in Madeira. 

Miradouro da Boca dos Namorados 

Boca dos Namorados viewpoint offers a wonderful view over Curral das Freiras valley. However, the view is a little bit obstructed by trees. But if you get a bit closer to the fence, you can still see the beautiful Curral das Freiras valley. Nevertheless, this viewpoint is not the best for photography, but it is a great spot for relaxing! Miradouro Boca dos Namorados is actually one of the few viewpoints in Madeira that has some facilities around. You can find wood tables, benches and even outdoor barbecues! Therefore it is a great spot for picnic, to prepare your own espetada for example. But it is also a great spot if you are looking for a Madeira viewpoint a bit more off the beaten path. The road has a dead end here, so you can have a really quiet break at this Madeira viewpoint before exploring more of the island. 

Boca da Corrida

Miradouro Boca da Corrida is together with Eira do Serrado viewpoint some of the best viewpoints on the Curral das Freiras valley. Boca da Corrida is located at an elevation of about 1000 meters and offers incredible panoramic views over the central massif of Madeira Island. It is also the start point of the Caminho Real da Encumeada trail. Because the road only leads to this viewpoint with starting point of the trail, you won’t find many other people here, despite other hikers. So if you’re looking for one of the quieter viewpoints in Madeira with an incredible mountain view, then definitely put Boca da Corrida on your list!

Miradouro de São Cristóvão 

This stunning coastal viewpoint located on the northern coastline of Madeira offers panoramic views on the ocean and an impressive cliff. Located in between São Vicente and Boaventura this is a great stop along the way. There is a restaurant called Restaurante São Cristóvão if you want to have a lunch break. If you’re looking for a bit more exploring around, you can also start the Caminho da Entrosa which is a 2 kilometre one way walk on the ancient pathway up the cliff. It is a pretty heavy incline from the Miradouro de São Cristóvão but the views on 380 meters height are incredible! 

Miradouro do Véu da Noiva

The Véu da Noiva waterfall viewpoint is an incredible spot on the north coast of Madeira. It is located in between Seixal and São Vicente and can’t be missed when exploring Madeira’s north west coast. This beautiful waterfall, known as the Bride Veil, runs down the mountain and flows straight into the Atlantic Ocean. This is one of the two viewpoints in Madeira that shows a waterfall pouring into the ocean. Rocha do Navio in Santana is the other one. The viewing platform is very easy to reach from the road and is even wheelchair friendly. You can easily combine the Véu da Noiva waterfall viewpoint with a visit to Seixal beach and the Seixal Natural Pools.

Eira da Achada Viewpoint

Eira da Achada is another one of those very easy to reach viewpoints in Madeira. Located along the road at the top of Ribeira da Janela parish, you can easily park your car at the designated car park and walk to the viewpoint platform. The Eira da Achada viewpoint offers a stunning view over the entire northern coast of Madeira Island overlooking Seixal, São Vicente, and Ponta Delgada. The viewpoint even has some facilities such as benches, a children’s playground and picnic areas that make this a great spot for a lunch break.

Santa viewpoint Porto Moniz 

Santa viewpoint, also known as Miradouro Santinha can be found on the way up to Santa along the regional 101 road. It offers incredible panoramic views of the village of Porto Moniz, Ilheu Mole and the natural swimming pools. There are enough spots to safely park your car and enjoy the view for some minutes. However it is not some of the most tranquil viewpoints in Madeira because it it located right next to the road. Nevertheless, it’s worth a stop when you’re on your way to Porto Moniz. 

Where to stay to explore the best viewpoints in Madeira?

Funchal

There are several towns in Madeira that are great to stay while exploring the island. Funchal is the capital town of the island with the most restaurants around. It has a charming old town and all sorts of facilities you might look for such as a boulevard, shopping centre, cafe’s and nightlife. It is a great place to base yourself with plenty of culture and beautiful old buildings and charming streets to explore. There are also a few beaches in Funchal to enjoy the ocean. However these beaches are from pebble stones.

Calheta

If you want to be based near a sandy beach in Madeira, then Calheta is a great place. While Funchal is more to the east of the island located, Calheta is more to the west of the island located. So eventually you can also stay a few days in both towns depending the total length of your stay in Madeira. Calheta has an atmospheric marine with restaurants offering great spots to watch the sunset and enjoy a meal.
